Orchestra
In 1998 Guido Dieteren approached keyboard player and childhood friend Falco Borsboom to co-write for a new orchestra production that was to become Guido’s Orchestra. Guido conducts and plays solo violin as well as composing and arranging with Falco who plays keyboards and oversees a lot of the orchestra’s recordings. Within a year the members of the new orchestra had already performed at the Heineken NightLive events: six shows with pop icons such as Elvis Costello, K’s Choice, Roland Gift and Toni Braxton.
In 2001 solo soprano Wendy Kokkelkoren joined the Orchestra and they performed together for the first time in the town of Thorn in the province of Limburg, in the south of Holland.
This wonderful group of musicians has been hand-picked by Guido for their musicianship but equally importantly for their enthusiasm and passion. They are a group of vibrant young players – their average age is 27 years old - from a total of nine countries –including Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Armenia and Russia – not to mention those from Holland itself where the Orchestra is based.
In 2005 Guido’s Orchestra performed alongside Marco Borsato for the 13 date Symphonica shows in Antwerp, Belgium to 17,000 spectators each night.
In 2006 the event had expanded to become Symphonica in Rosso and moved to the Gelredome in Arnhem, Holland. Guido’s Orchestra again performed alongside Marco Borsato along with Lucie Silvas and Andrea Bocelli. Guido’s Orchestra returned in 2007 to perform with Paul de Leeuw. The third edition in 2008 took on a more international flavour with Lionel Ritchie, Candy Dulfer and Trijntje Oosterhuis performing. The instrumental battle between Candy Dulfer and Guido was one of the undoubted highlights of the show. By the conclusion of the 2008 events Guido’s Orchestra had clocked up performances in front of over 1 million live spectators.
Guido’s Orchestra have recently confirmed that they will be returning to perform at the 2009 Symphonica in Rosso, this time alongside the legendary Diana Ross! The concerts will be on 16th 17th and 18th and 18th October 2009.
In spring 2008 Guido’s Orchestra toured the large theatres of the Netherlands with the Red Passion Live in Concert tour. Both press and audience reactions were overwhelming.
On 1st July 2008 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Guido’s Orchestra played both the American and Dutch anthems and gave a mini concert for the launch of the largest cruise ship of the Holland America line, the MS Eurodam. This will surely be good practice for again performing the American anthem on tour in 2010!
On 27th June 2009 Dutch Minister for Economics, Maria Verhoeven opened the spectacular ‘Live From The Heart of Europe’ show in Vaals, Holland. The show featured Irish singing sensation Tommy Fleming and the amazing 5-piece percussion group Van Kampen Percussion as guest performers.
The Orchestra are very excited about the forthcoming American tour. They are already planning their outfits and arranging to meet up with their many friends and family members in America. Facebook is abuzz with postings telling everyone they know – and coming from nine different countries, they know a lot of people in America – to watch Guido’s Orchestra only on PBS in November/December 2009.
Visit the website to meet the orchestra over the coming months as we will introduce them section by section.
"The musical arrangements and the forty-piece orchestra ‘Guido’s Orchestra’ give my music wings.
Guido, you're the man! This is not my show, it's yours!"
- Lionel Richie -
“…And if this Orchestra also brings swinging music, varied, played with loads of enthusiasm and passion, there’s very little that could go wrong.”
- CultuurPodium, Hans Zilverberg, 6 May 2008 –
“Guido's Orchestra gave a concert at the new Luxor Theatre for the first time, but it will definitely not be the last. It was a wonderful evening with beautiful music, both classical and pop. The venue was packed with a wide audience of all ages who were very much enjoying themselves. Guido's Orchestra is great and will conquer the world for sure.”
- Rob Wiegman, director new Luxor Theatre Rotterdam –
